The published version is available at: Batching plays an important role in semiconductor fabs, and it can lead to inefficiency if not treated with care. The performance of parallel batch processes is often approximated by the G/G/1 based approximate models. By carefully examining the existing models, the dependence between queueing time and wait-to-batch time has been identified. A new improved model for parallel batch systems is proposed to exploit this dependence. The computation of the new model is still simple and fast, but it gives better approximation by reducing the systematic error in earlier models which ignored the dependence between queueing time and wait-to-batch time. Note to Practitioners: Practical manufacturing systems are usually very complex. In order to analyze system behavior, assumptions are made to enable the analysis. A decomposition approach is commonly adopted based on an independence assumption. However, any two components in a complex manufacturing system are seldom completely independent. When there are real dependencies, we should take special care with analyses based on decomposition. This paper examines parallel batch processing and through detailed analysis, identifies a particular dependence and proposes an improved model that is validated through experimentation.

FINITE POPULATION SINGLE SERVER BATCH SERVICE QUEUE WITH COMPULSORY SERVER VACATION

A single server finite population queueing model with compulsory server vacation and with fixed batch service has been considered. For this model the system steady state probabilities are obtained. Some performance measures are calculated and numerical examples are also given.

A Multiprocessor System with Non-Preemptive Earliest-Deadline-First Scheduling Policy: A Performability Study

This paper introduces an analytical method for approximating the performability of a firm realtime system modeled by a multi-server queue. The service discipline in the queue is earliestdeadline- first (EDF), which is an optimal scheduling algorithm. Real-time jobs with exponentially distributed relative deadlines arrive according to a Poisson process. All jobs have deadlines until the end of s...

Unreliable bulk retrial queues with delayed repairs and modified vacation policy

The present investigation deals with the bulk arrival M/G/1 retrial queue with impatient customers and modified vacation policy. The incoming customers join the virtual pool of customers called orbit if they find the server being busy, on vacation or in broken down state otherwise the service of the customer at the head of the batch is started by the server. The service is provided in k</em...

ANALYSIS OF FINITE BUFFER RENEWAL INPUT QUEUE WITH BALKING AND MARKOVIAN SERVICE PROCESS

This paper presents the analysis of a renewal input  finite buffer queue wherein the customers can decide either to  join the queue with a probability or balk. The service process is Markovian service process ($MSP$) governed  by an underlying $m$-state Markov chain. Employing the supplementary  variable and imbedded Markov chain techniques,   the steady-state system length distributions at pre...

Analysis of M/G/ 1 queueing model with state dependent arrival and vacation

This investigation deals with single server queueing system wherein the arrival of the units follow Poisson process with varying arrival rates in different states and the service time of the units is arbitrary (general) distributed. The server may take a vacation of a fixed duration or may continue to be available in the system for next service. Using the probability argument, we construct the ...
